Space Design for Multi-Use Work spaces
Separate Working Space and Storage Space
If you can't find a clear spot to work because all your surfaces are covered, you might tell yourself: “If ONLY I had more space, I could get my work done.” While additional space could help all of us, what you're likely experiencing is 'surface swiping'—the habit of using every available surface as storage.
When furniture meant for productive work becomes a storage area, it discourages focused work sessions and creates sensory overload. This approach actually wastes the limited space you do have.
You may even convince yourself that “it’s just how I work” or “the mess makes sense to me”. That’s great - but I think you and I both know that you are putting in a lot more work than you need to be. And that can take a toll.
By optimizing your existing space—clearly separating work areas from storage—you'll restore a sense of calm. The solution is simple but powerful: keep your surfaces clear when you're not actively using them.
You need to be strict with yourself at first for it to sink in as a routine.
Examples
Bedroom + Office
Rule: Do not put your clothes on any of your furniture. This becomes a problem often when you are trying different outfits on with limiting time. You end up throwing your rejected clothes on the chair, your desk, or your bed. What happens is when you get back from your event or night out, you’ll be greeted with uncomfortable chair, an unusable work space, and uncozy bed.
Tip: Get a second hamper specifically for clean clothes you don’t have time to put back. I’ll only think you’re lazy for not putting them back right away if they are strewn about all over your room.
Archive + Working Space
Rule: End each day with clear surfaces. Look, I know you have a big collection. I know that you feel cramped. But don’t make yourself more cramped than you have to! Visual clutter is real. It’s why when you look out in an open field, you feel calm and restored. Create a small version of that everyday.
Tip: If you are really strapped for space, seek out furniture that has a big surface on top and some storage below. You can use that storage specifically for tools to help you work or even as storage for projects you are actively working on. That way, at the end of the day, you can clear off your surface by simply tucking them underneath the surface. This will help you turn stress into motivation every morning.
