The 3-Headed Monster That Keeps You Looking At Your Screen
My goal for you is to look at your screen less, and spend more time outside. Unfortunately, lurking inside every cubicle is a formidable three-headed monster whose sole purpose is keeping you captive indoors, eyes locked on glowing rectangles…
The 3-Headed Monster
Head 1: Your Files. Your desktop is an absolute mess. Your folders don’t make any sense. If you need to find a document, it takes you the whole afternoon. My friend once told me when she gets overwhelmed, she just makes a new folder called “Desktop” and drags everything in there. Kind of genius, kind of horrifying. There is a better way.
Head 2: Email Inbox. “Hey did you get that message I sent you?” “Yeahhh…I think I did”. You are stalling. You know what awaits you - 1,000+ emails of important work stuff, daily newsletters from a company you don’t even like, and news articles from your dad. You ask your co-worker to resend the email.
Head 3: Messy Data. You’ve always dreamed of creating a database to help people find your collections. Or maybe you are really excited about how A.I. could help your solo-archiving feel less…solo. But you know that even you, A HUMAN, can’t sort out the information you’ve collected over the years. If you put that into a machine learning algorithm you’ll know in your heart that it won’t be accurate.
The good news is that IF we can cut off each head one-by-one and make sure they don’t regenerate, we will never see the Screen Monster again. We’ll be feeling grass beneath our feet and hearing birdsongs instead of notification pings.
